And emails came there none...

Yesterday I rejoined the Labour Party.  I left some years ago for economic reasons but the other day I received an email from my Trade Union political organiser which pointed out that since I was a fully paid up union member of an already affiliated Trade Union I could apply for affiliate membership status for only a couple of £ more a month.  Thinking about it I thought I may as well do this as I am already paying the political levy anyway so I may as well get a vote out of it...

...so I filled in the form and nothing happened.  Not even an email stating that "we are considering your application".  I wonder if they are reading my blog to check I haven't written anything "in the last two years that would have led to expulsion".  Or if I am on a naughty list.  I wonder if it's harder to join these days...

Anyway, it's only a couple of quid.  I'm sure I can invest it in something more sensible if they're too disorganised or picky to have me...

Still you'd think there'd be some kind of automated receipt email even if if just said "Get Lost"...

Postscript...after a bit of public moaning and emailing the union I seem to be a member again... 7/12/22

What is a birth? And how does it affect me?

I'm not saying the BBC talks down to people but it's always running articles like

What is a recession? And how does it affect me?

It surely can't be long before

What is a birth? And how does it affect me?

At some point you were born.  It might have been yesterday...

Stone me

Another man called Hancock has gone to Australia to revive his comedy career as he can't get a gig in the UK anymore... Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.  Things went wrong too many times...

Deep Space 9 Series 3 is a bit boring...

Recently I’ve been watching Deep Space 9 on Netflix because it’s there.  Series 1 and 2 were great.  Now I’m half way through Series 3 though and it’s starting to drag…  A whole episode where they try to get off with different people due to a virus or something.  Kira Nerys and Bareil Antos how tedious … and what a pair of prigs… Julian Bashir …kind of who cares.  Why don’t we see more Quark?  Jake Sisko is boring without Rom.  Gul Dukat seems to have a better gig at the moment…  The O'Briens are constantly bickering despite the long distance relationship… Elim Garak is busy doing the sewing… maybe we’ll turn a corner soon…

David Walliams

I was on the comedy circuit for twenty years and in that time I never once heard a comedian on stage refer to another person as a cunt. I am frankly appalled by this kind of behaviour and I find it very hard to fathom. What was wrong with mother-in-law jokes?

I don't know...

I don't know if anyone else has noticed but the people who say they will defend to the death your right to say something they profoundly disagree with never do.

I think it would be fun to run a twitter..

I can't claim to have followed Elon Musk 's career closely but his acquisition of Twitter reminds me strangely of this scene in Citizen Kane.  Like Kane, Musk inherited wealth by inheriting a mine and eventually decides that the thing to do with it is to own a [social] media organisation.  Kane poaches the staff of a rival newspaper until he in effect owns the same institution... but his employees start to shape him without him realising it.  Despite the high profile and needlessly cruel and sudden public sackings designed as an statement of power and authority and the theatrical production of a kitchen sink (a classic Kane type publicity stunt) will the same happen to Musk?  Musk, like Kane, thinks that he is not just running a business but in fact offering a vital public service.   But is he?  Both seem to constantly seek attention.  I wonder if he has a Leland as his Greek Chorus...?  Of course there are many disimilarities between Kane and Musk and no one can deny Musk's engineering achievements but modern history is littered with people who thought that they controlled the media but remain blind to how the media is changing and exploiting them....

Leland: You talk about the people as though you owned them, as though they belong to you. Goodness. As long as I can remember, you've talked about giving the people their rights, as if you can make them a present of Liberty, as a reward for services rendered...Remember the working man?  ....You used to write an awful lot about the workingman... He's turning into something called organized labor. You're not going to like that one little bit when you find out it means that your workingman expects something is his right, not as your gift! Charlie, when your precious underprivileged really get together, oh boy! That's going to add up to something bigger than your privileges! Then I don't know what you'll do! Sail away to a desert island probably and lord it over the monkeys! ....You don't care about anything except you. You just want to persuade people that you love 'em so much that they ought to love you back. Only you want love on your own terms. Something to be played your way, according to your rules.

Meanwhile back in 1922...

"All right, " said Kwasi, climbing down from tax cuts

When his budget gave the £ a blow

Was he in trouble, economic rubble landed on Liz Truss's dome

Sir Graham and me had another cuppa tea

And then we went home

Economy 7 blows a valve...

Solved the question of why Bulb always want to replace my meter and won't let me just run economy 7 on my two rate meter....apart from the fact they don't want to lose money   It switches by wireless...

 Yes...

As the conspiracy theorists would say I did my own research and found out the answer to this.   "In October 2011, the BBC admitted that the Droitwich transmitter, including Radio 4's longwave service and Radio Teleswitch, will cease to operate when one of the last two valves breaks, and no effort would be made to manufacture more nor to install a replacement longwave transmitter.". So basically the UK's last remaining longwave transmitter that broadcasts R4 longwave and switches my meter between tarrifs will die when the one remaining valve goes.  Hope someone's told the test match presenters...

Organised crime has suspended its operations for 10 days as a mark of respect

Dear Mr Miller

Thankyou very much for your email, in light of the operational changes for Police Officers, therefore leaving PCSOs to run the wards on their own, for the period of defined national mourning, until Monday 19/09/2022 (the day of the funeral), it has been necessary to postpone events such as these until Tuesday 20/09/2022 onwards, when operations return to normal. This is also the same for internal events as well, such as training days.

Many thanks for your understanding at this time.

Dear PC Oliver Hardy*

Thank you for your email.

I'm not entirely sure why the passing of the Queen requires public servants to stop doing anything. Neither am I convinced that it is what a lady whose protestant work ethic is so strong that she got off her deathbed just to shake hands with the Prime Minister the day before her death would have wanted. Then again I am not privy to your operational information. It may be organised crime has also suspended its operations for 10 days as a mark of respect.

I hear too that the Bank Of England cannot change interest rates during the period of national mourning which seems strange as I doubt inflation will take a week and a half off. Perhaps they don't want to create distracting headlines but I have never seen why it should be necessary to become irrational to show that you care.

But you must do what you feel is right.

Thank you

Anthony Miller

Dear Resident

I have had a brief conversation with Councillor Jade Aplomb*, and in light of the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, and due to the period of mourning, we have decided out of respect, to postpone the joint Police & Councillor drop-in surgery at Suburbia Park Cafe. This will now take place on Friday 23/09/2022 1500-1600 hours.

Pear Shaped in Dystopia - Episode 29

Then Churchill Said to Me ...you won't find out anything from the BBC

My rather pointless exercise in trying to get the BBC to explain why "When Churchill Said To Me..." was not broadcast for over a decade has come to an end.  Unless someone wants to crowdfund an appeal to the First-tier Tribunal (Information Rights).  Apparently the BBC and the ICO think that should the BBC ever have to explain what went on it would undermine the BBC commercially.  One can see that BBC producers don't want to be submerged with nosey FOIs but I thought it was worth a go.  After all Then Churchill Said to Me is a real curiosity.  Frankie Howerd first appeared in a historical comedy on stage in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum ... when it was moved to TV this became (for copyright reasons) Up Pompeii ... which then became a film directed by Ned Sherrin (yes that one off Loose Ends).  The film was so successful it was followed by Up the Chastity Belt as years before Blackadder did the same thing Ned had the idea of transplanting the same actors through time...

Lurk became Lurkio and got to hang out with Ertha Kitt who sang the theme tune.  Apparently she was spending a lot of time in the UK after being a bit blacklisted in Hollywood for upsetting the President Lyndon B. Johnson's wife "The children of America are not rebelling for no reason. They are not hippies for no reason at all. We don't have what we have on Sunset Blvd. for no reason. They are rebelling against something. There are so many things burning the people of this country, particularly mothers. They feel they are going to raise sons – and I know what it's like, and you have children of your own, Mrs. Johnson – we raise children and send them to war."  Mrs Johnson was apparently reduced to tears and so the story goes the CIA conspired to put it about that she was a lady of very loose morals ...

After Up the Chastity Belt Ned came up with the idea of Up the Front (set in WWI France.... Again not unlike Blackadder but wit more smut than anti-war sentiment) which featured Zsa Zsa Gabor as Mata Hari and Bill Fraser as Lurkio/Lurk's recurring nemesis.  It was written by Sid Colin and Eddie Braben (of Morcombe and Wise fame).  Up the Chastity Belt was written by Sid Colin, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson (of Hancock fame).  Up Pompeii was written by Sid Colin (of the Army Game) fame.  So Then Churchill Said to Me would seem to be a natural contuation of this conceit... it was written by Maurice Sellar (who had worked on Up the Front) and Lou Jones... and featured Nicholas Courtney who had given up being straight man to Doctor Who to become... It really is a very odd program ...for a start the Cabinet War Rooms were not even open when it was made but the depiction of Churchill's bunker is suspiciously accurate... right down to the colours of the walls and the widths of the corridors etc...

It really is an oddity ... not as odd as the failed Whoops Baghdad ...which would have been Up Baghdad if it hadn't been thought that sounded too much like support for Saddam and the Ba'ath party... see here... but pretty odd...

Of course we know the reason it wasn't shown for 10 years was something to do with the Falklands War.  But beyond that I have discovered ... nothing. The explanation given is that information about the timing of the broadcast of comedy programs is somehow Journalism?
