Shopkeepers - Deter crime by turning into an Argos

Labour Minister Dame Diana Johnson said today that "I think stores need to play their part in making sure that items that are high value are not at the front of the store because that is an issue in some stores, that they put bottles of alcohol at the front of the store, which obviously people will nick.  If they are going to steal to resell, they will nick items like that. So I think it is not just one thing here, it has to be an approach with the retailers, with the government and with the police to work together."
Asked for further advice Dame Diana added that the ideal format for any shop is "an Argos.  This is a brilliant design where the display is simply a catalogue on a computer screen and the staff have to physically fetch every item for you.  Argos is a wonder of our high street and is so successful it is now inside another shop called Sainsburys.  Our aim now is to prevent shoplifting from Sainsburys by putting Sainsburys inside another shop and that shop inside yet another until they all fit together like a series of Russian dolls.  No one will shoplift then."

Meanwhile Tory Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley Matthew Barber claimed people had a duty to stand up to shoplifters rather than relying on police officers.  "If you're not prepared to get your head kicked in or risk being stabbed then you can't really complain about crime," he said.
